Hybrid electric

What it means

A hybrid carries both an electric drive and a combustion engine or generator. It can move on electricity alone for part of its use, and fall back on fuel for the rest. The arrangement varies: some boats drive the propeller mechanically and use the electric motor for slow-speed work, others drive only electrically and use the engine to make electricity.

Where the line blurs

Marketing rarely draws the distinction clearly, and a boat sold on the strength of silent running may carry a diesel tank as standard. We list a boat as hybrid when the builder's own material describes a combustion source as part of the standard specification — not when a generator is an option a buyer may decline.

Why it matters

A hybrid answers the range question differently from a pure-electric boat: it trades silence and simplicity for the ability to keep going. That is a legitimate choice, and for long passages it is often the only realistic one. What matters is knowing which you are buying before the fuel filler tells you.
